University of Houston Men’s Golf Shines at Trinity Forest Invitational
DALLAS – The University of Houston Men’s Golf team showcased impressive talent at the Trinity Forest Invitational. Senior Hudson Weibel shot a remarkable 67, bringing his total to 137, which put him in a tie for sixth place overall. The team as a whole scored 281 in the second round, landing them fifth with a total of 563.
Weibel started strong, scoring a birdie on the second hole. He then wowed spectators with three birdies across four holes from Nos. 5 to 8. After a minor setback with a bogey on No. 11, he finished strong with two more birdies, ending the day with an excellent round.
Senior Kevin An also stood out, achieving his best round of the season with a bogey-free 66. This performance elevated him 33 spots into a tie for 16th at 140. An performed well early, making birdies on the second and sixth holes, then clinching three more birdies in a solid stretch from Nos. 14 to 17.
The Cougars’ junior players, Chi Chun Chen and Grant Doggett, both had solid performances too, with Chen tied at 16th and Doggett tied for 56th. Freshman Jayk Altic, playing individually, was tied for 63rd.
Leading the team competition was South Alabama, finishing at 553, each stroke ahead of Rice. USC held third place with 556, followed by SMU with 558. The backdrop of the tournament saw strong competition from teams like East Tennessee State and Baylor.
Individually, Rice’s Lukas Boandl and Louisiana’s Malan Potgieter topped the leaderboard at 132. Weibel and a few others were not far behind, all aiming for a top finish.
The final round kicks off today at 8:30 a.m., and the Cougars are eager to continue their strong start this season, hoping to replicate their successes from earlier tournaments. Earlier this season, they had stunning performances at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic and the Argent Financial Classic.
A fascinating fact: this season marks the first time Houston secured a top-two finish in their opening two events since the 1984-85 season when they won their first four tournaments.
