Houston Swimming & Diving Faces Texas A&M in Season Opener
The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team had a tough start to the season, losing to #20 Texas A&M, 166-133, at the CRWC Natatorium. Despite the setback, the Cougars shone brightly with five first-place finishes and six new Top 10 times.
Freshman Emma Overall led the way in the 1000-yard freestyle, clocking in at 9:59.16. Sophomore Mariana Cote closely followed with a time of 9:59.45, earning third and fifth slots on the Cougars’ Top 10 list, respectively.
In other standout performances, junior Evelyn Entrekin topped the 100-yard breaststroke at 1:00.50. Sophomore Elizabeth Benoit took first in the 500-yard freestyle with a speedy 4:51.71. Senior Virag Peter led in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:12.20, while senior Liya Goupil completed the 100-yard freestyle in 50.19 seconds.
Sophomore Alexia Duncan also had an impressive showing, securing second in the 100-yard backstroke (53.68) and third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.69). Her performances currently rank her sixth and ninth in the Top 10 list for those events.
In diving, freshman Maisy Woloszyn and sophomore Caroline Roelen made a splash with their first zone cuts of the season. Woloszyn placed fourth in the 1-meter springboard (270.90), and Roelen came in fifth in the 3-meter springboard (287.25).
Looking ahead, Houston will hit the road for a quad-meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, facing LSU, Rice, and Tulane at noon on Saturday, November 8. After that, they will host the annual Phill Hansel Invitational from November 19-21 at the CRWC Natatorium.
This match highlights the Cougars’ potential as they build momentum for the season. With strong freshmen and returning talent, fans have plenty to watch for as the team continues to grow.
