Incoming freshmen at the University of Illinois will face higher tuition rates next school year, along with increased costs for room, board, and student fees. This move comes as a response to ongoing inflation, according to university officials.
Recently, the University’s Board of Trustees approved a 2% tuition hike for in-state undergraduate students starting in the fall of 2026. This increase is described as “modest,” especially since tuition has been frozen for seven of the last eleven years. Notably, state law ensures that tuition rates will remain unchanged for these students throughout their four years.
U of I System President Tim Killeen emphasized that this change helps balance the university’s rising expenses while maintaining affordable education for families in Illinois. He reassured students and parents of the university’s commitment to financial aid and the promise of stable tuition costs for undergraduates.
Currently, over 68% of resident undergraduates at the university receive some form of financial aid. More than half pay less than $3,000 each semester in tuition and mandatory fees.
Tuition for out-of-state and international students will rise significantly: between 7% and 14.5% at Urbana-Champaign, 2% to 3.3% at the Chicago campus, and 2% at Springfield. The trustees have also approved a 5% increase in room and board for Urbana-Champaign and Chicago, and 3.5% in Springfield. First-time on-campus residents at Urbana-Champaign will see this increase, while rates for returning students will remain stable for up to four years.
Student fees will rise as well: 2% at Urbana-Champaign, nearly 2% at Chicago, and 6.8% in Springfield. Without aid, the estimated cost for an in-state student this year ranges from $36,930 to $42,310. Out-of-state students might pay between $57,622 to $65,722, while international students could face costs up to $68,966.
The reaction to these increases has sparked discussions on social media, with many students expressing concerns about the burden of rising costs. Many feel that while education should be valuable, affordability is critical.
