University of Indianapolis Celebrates Service for Impact Day

Today, the University of Indianapolis revived a beloved tradition: the second annual Service for Impact Day. Over 200 students, faculty, and staff rolled up their sleeves to volunteer at local nonprofits like Horizon House, the Damien Center, and the Boys & Girls Club. This event embodies the university’s motto, “Education for Service,” encouraging students to connect with their community.

Marianna Foulkrod, the director of the Center for Service-Learning and Community Engagement, highlighted the unique drive of today’s students. “Gen Z is marked by a strong desire to make a difference,” she said. The activities for the day, such as making snack kits and crafting mats for the homeless, aim to mold these students into impactful community leaders.

Foulkrod pointed out that students often discover new passions. “They’ll say, ‘I didn’t know I enjoyed gardening’ or ‘I didn’t realize mental health was such a vital topic.’” This self-discovery deepens their connection to their identities as “Greyhounds,” the university’s mascot.

The event kicked off at the Schwitzer Student Center, where Vice President Andy Kocher emphasized the importance of community service. He stated that Service for Impact Day showcases UIndy’s commitment to collective responsibility: “Education isn’t just about personal success; it’s about service to others.”

Participants were assigned various projects around campus and later gathered for food and activities to celebrate their hard work.

A Modern Movement in Community Service

This spirit of community service isn’t unique to UIndy; similar initiatives are popping up on campuses nationwide. A recent survey by the Campus Compact found that nearly 80% of students believe community service should be a requirement in higher education.

Interestingly, social media has amplified this trend. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok showcase students engaging in acts of service, creating a ripple effect that inspires others to join. The hashtag #ServeWithPurpose has gained traction, connecting volunteers across the country.

As Foulkrod noted, these experiences shape not just the students, but the communities they serve. By fostering a generation that values purpose and service, universities are helping to build a brighter, more compassionate future.
