The University of Leeds has been building important relationships in India for over 25 years, especially in fields like medicine, biotechnology, social sciences, and engineering. Recently, during a visit to New Delhi, Vice Chancellor Professor Shearer West led a delegation that signed new agreements with several prestigious Indian institutions, including the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and the University of Delhi.
These partnerships are about more than just exchanging ideas; they aim to address global challenges. For instance, both the university and its Indian partners share a commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing areas such as health technology and social sciences.
Professor West expressed enthusiasm for the trip, highlighting the opportunities to deepen these academic ties. She noted, “Our strengths in research strongly align with those of our Indian partners. We plan to create joint research programs and offer students more chances to study abroad.”
One notable agreement was with the Regional Centre for Biotechnology, focusing on collaborative research in fundamental sciences. There’s also a potential partnership involving the Regional Centre’s Bio-incubator and Leeds’ Nexus innovation hub.
Furthermore, cooperation with the Bharath Institute of Higher Education and Research will center on public health and tackling antimicrobial resistance. Engaging with Indian alumni during the visit also provided valuable insights, helping shape Leeds’ future initiatives.
These collaborations reflect a growing recognition of India’s role in global education and research initiatives. As educational strategies evolve, universities like Leeds will continue to find new ways to engage with international partners.
