University of Lincoln Takes Bold Step Forward in AI Innovation Through Microsoft and Cloudforce Collaboration

The University of Lincoln is rolling out nebulaONE®, a cutting-edge Generative AI platform from Cloudforce, built on Microsoft Azure. This platform aims to make assistive AI tools accessible to all students and staff, ensuring everyone benefits from high-quality digital support.

At the heart of this initiative is the belief that AI should enhance learning, not replace it. The nebulaONE platform offers personal learning aids, language support, and research guidance. This approach encourages students to engage in critical thinking and creativity. Professor Abigail Moriarty from the University of Lincoln stated, “AI isn’t cheating—it’s a tool for lifelong learning and employability.” She draws parallels to how calculators revolutionized math teaching, emphasizing that AI can broaden educational experiences responsibly.

AI is now ubiquitous, readily available through smartphones and laptops. Ignoring its presence is unrealistic. Instead, Lincoln embraces this change by equipping students with reliable AI tools that support their education. This initiative teaches students the ethical use of AI, including proper citation and understanding its limitations. This knowledge prepares graduates to navigate the workforce responsibly, a skill employers increasingly value.

Cloudforce’s VP for the UK & Europe, Danny Attias, praised Lincoln’s focus on human values. He noted that while they implement new technology, the goal is to build students’ confidence and integrity for life.

nebulaONE is set to improve the university experience for everyone:

  • Students: Access to personalized study support and faster resource retrieval.
  • Academics: Help with research tasks and innovative teaching methods.
  • Staff: Automation of repetitive tasks and better decision-making insights.

The University of Lincoln is part of a broader trend among institutions that prioritize responsible AI in education. A recent AI Innovation Guide for Higher Education, published by Microsoft and Cloudforce, illustrates how universities are adopting nebulaONE for equitable AI use. Lincoln’s efforts advance this movement, emphasizing responsible technology use in its educational community.

The University is committed to using AI responsibly to protect privacy and security. With robust assessments and clear guidelines, it aims to maintain the quality of its degrees while embracing digital transformation. Chris Green, the University’s Chief Operating Officer, highlighted that this collaboration fosters innovation, collaboration, and equitable access for all.

The University of Lincoln is well-regarded in various academic rankings. It has a Silver award for Mental Health and Wellbeing and has connections with prominent organizations, enhancing its reputation. Recently, it received the Queen’s Anniversary Prize, the UK’s highest academic honor. Furthermore, over 75% of its research is rated as internationally excellent or world-leading.

The launch of nebulaONE at Lincoln represents a step towards preparing students for a future where AI is a critical tool in various aspects of life and work.
