Lynchburg Hornets Claim Fourth Regional Title
The University of Lynchburg baseball team clinched its fourth consecutive NCAA DIII regional title with an impressive 11-4 win over Christopher Newport. This victory came on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Bank of the James Stadium.
The Hornets displayed both offensive and defensive strength, scoring a total of 38 runs in their three regional games while allowing just six. They faced off against Penn St.-Behrend, Maryville, and Christopher Newport, showing their dominance throughout the tournament.
The game turned in the seventh inning when Lynchburg was tied at 4-4. It all started with Brandon Garcia drawing a walk and stealing second base. Benton Jones and Jack Pokorak followed suit with walks to load the bases. Quinn Madden then hit a huge three-run double, clearing the bases. He later scored on a wild pitch. Kyle Flora added a two-run triple, and Ryder Warren capped off the inning with an RBI triple. The Hornets rolled to 11 runs, leaving Christopher Newport unable to respond.
Christopher Newport had taken the lead first, scoring on an RBI single from Gus Croll. But Lynchburg quickly tied it with a run by Benton Jones from an RBI single by Jack Pokorak. The lead changed multiple times throughout the game, but the Hornets consistently fought back every time.
Madden stood out, racking up three hits, including two doubles, and contributing four RBIs. Flora also had a strong performance with three hits and three RBIs. On the mound, Trent Judd shone with four scoreless innings in relief, striking out three batters and allowing only two hits.
Next up, Lynchburg will face East Texas Baptist, the champion from the Texas regional, in the NCAA Super Regional. This best-of-three series will take place shortly, with dates set for May 23 and 24.
In recent years, Lynchburg has shown remarkable consistency in their performance, reflecting a strong coaching strategy and talented roster. According to a 2022 NCAA survey, teams that maintain their core roster often see better performance in playoffs, a trend Lynchburg is exemplifying.
