Lynchburg, Va. — The University of Lynchburg women’s lacrosse team faced a tough matchup against Randolph-Macon, ending in a 12-8 loss at Shellenberger Field.
Lynchburg (8-3, 2-1 ODAC) had standout performances from McKenna Steinau, who scored four goals and had four draw controls. Sydney Dumas also shone with three goals and an assist. Lily Messineo chipped in one goal, and goalkeeper Olivia Owings made six saves.
The game kicked off with Randolph-Macon (7-3, 1-1 ODAC) scoring first. Lynchburg quickly responded, taking a 2-1 lead through Dumas and Steinau. However, Randolph-Macon regained control, ending the first quarter with a 4-3 lead after a last-minute goal.
In the second quarter, Randolph-Macon extended their lead. Steinau’s unassisted goal brought Lynchburg within one, but the halftime score sat at 5-4 in favor of Randolph-Macon.
The third quarter saw Randolph-Macon stretch their lead to 7-4 with a 3-0 run before Messineo broke the streak. Although Lynchburg narrowed the gap by converting a free-position shot later in the quarter, Randolph-Macon finished the third up 9-6.
The final quarter started with Steinau scoring again, bringing Lynchburg closer. Despite a rally thanks to another goal from Steinau on a man-up opportunity, Randolph-Macon sealed their victory with late-game goals.
As the season progresses, the Hornets will need to regroup quickly. They have another ODAC showdown coming up against the Roanoke Maroons on Saturday, March 28.
