Lynchburg Women’s Lacrosse Faces Tough Loss Against Washington and Lee
On Saturday, the University of Lynchburg women’s lacrosse team faced a challenging game against Washington and Lee, ending with a score of 22-4.
McKenna Steinau stood out for Lynchburg, scoring two goals. Other players, like Hayli Williams and Neely Morris, contributed one goal each. Goalkeeper Olivia Owings made eight saves throughout the game.
The match started with Washington and Lee dominating early, scoring four times in just seven minutes. Lynchburg fought back when Steinau scored midway through the first quarter, and Morris added a goal at the end, bringing the score to 8-2 by the close of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw Washington and Lee extend their lead, but Lynchburg managed to score twice. Williams halted Washington’s scoring streak, and Steinau netted another goal from a free-position chance, closing the gap to 11-4.
However, Washington and Lee continued to pressure, scoring four more before halftime and leading 15-4 at the break. Despite their efforts, Lynchburg couldn’t increase their score in the second half.
Notably, Lynchburg performed well in transition, successfully completing all 12 clear attempts and matching Washington and Lee in draw controls, with each team securing 14. The Hornets also forced eight turnovers and converted 2 of 5 free-position attempts.
Lynchburg looks to regroup in their next match against Warren Wilson on Tuesday, April 21. In recent years, Lacrosse has gained popularity at colleges, with participation rates increasing. The NCAA reported that women’s lacrosse had a participation growth rate of over 10% in the last five years, reflecting a broader trend in women’s sports.
