ORONO, Maine (WABI) – The University of Maine System has announced a temporary halt on funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
A spokesperson for the university revealed that they received a communication from the USDA’s financial office. This message instructed USDA staff to suspend funding for both the University of Maine System and Columbia University.
This pause will last as the USDA looks into potential issues related to Title VI and Title IX violations. Recently, the USDA began a compliance review of UMaine focused on Title IX.
One key concern is whether biological males should compete on women’s sports teams. The university has confirmed that its athletic programs comply with state and federal laws, as well as NCAA policies, which currently prohibit athletes assigned male at birth from joining women’s teams.
The University of Maine System has stated that it is not aware of being investigated under Title VI. Last year, UMaine received about $30 million from the USDA, which greatly supported Maine’s farmers, fishermen, and foresters, among other vital programs in the state.
