University of Miami Tackles Micromobility: New Restrictions for Safer Campus Travel

The University of Miami is making new rules for electric scooters, e-bikes, and other personal mobility devices. Starting on August 19, students and staff won’t be able to ride or park these vehicles on sidewalks, breezeways, or crowded areas like the Foote Green. This change comes in response to safety concerns, including accidents and battery fires.

The university’s Parking and Transportation Department explained that they want to create a safer environment. “We’ve seen a growing number of incidents involving pedestrian collisions and blocked emergency routes,” they mentioned. Distracted riders, often spotted using scooters while wearing earbuds or staring at their phones, further contribute to the problem.

Here’s what you need to know about the new policy:

• You must park all devices at designated outdoor racks.
• Indoor charging or storage is not allowed.
• Register your device with the University of Miami Police Department.
• Ignoring these rules could lead to fines, impoundment, or other penalties.

This shift reflects a wider trend among colleges in the U.S., as they deal with the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries and the increasing use of personal electric vehicles.

A recent study revealed that 30% of college students rely on e-scooters or e-bikes to navigate their campuses. However, safety issues are becoming a growing concern, especially with reports of accidents linked to battery malfunctions.

The University of Miami also prohibits shared scooter services like Bird and Lime and currently has no plans to change that policy.
