Michigan Gymnastics Shines at NCAA Regionals
Baton Rouge, La. – The University of Michigan’s women’s gymnastics team made headlines recently by placing second in the NCAA Regional Second Round. With a score of 196.900, the Wolverines earned a spot in the regional final on April 4, their first since 2023.
The competition was intense, with No. 7 Stanford finishing on top at 197.175. North Carolina and Utah State followed, scoring 196.250 and 195.750, respectively.
Michigan’s performance was strong. In their final rotation, they scored 49.150 on the uneven bars. Sophie Parenti led with a score of 9.850. The team also had impressive scores on the floor, with Carly Bauman, Sophia Diaz, and Quincy Walters all achieving 9.900.
Starting with a solid 49.075 in the first rotation, Michigan faced stiff competition. They quickly climbed to the top after the second rotation, where they posted a remarkable 49.400. By the halfway mark, they were leading the way.
However, during the vault, Michigan fell to second place. Reyna Guggino managed to secure a score of 9.900, but the team had a couple of lower scores that impacted their position.
As the meet progressed, UNC pressed hard for a comeback, but Michigan’s consistent performances, including a 9.875 from Diaz on the uneven bars, helped seal their fate. Despite a close battle, North Carolina couldn’t pull far ahead and ended third.
Looking ahead, Michigan now prepares for the regional final. The stakes are high, as winning could mean a trip to the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.
