Jay Hill Joins Michigan Football Coaching Staff
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan has made a significant move in its football program. Jay Hill has been appointed as the Lester Family Defensive Coordinator. This announcement came from Head Coach Kyle Whittingham, who is kicking off his first season with the Wolverines.
Alongside Hill, several other coaches will join the defensive team:
- Jernaro Gilford: Defensive backs
- Lewis Powell: Defensive ends/edges
- Alex Whittingham: Linebackers
- Lou Esposito: Defensive line (retained)
- David Denham: Defensive line analyst (continued)
Kerry Coombs will remain as the special teams coordinator, with Garrett Clawson assisting him.
Meet the New Coaches
Jernaro Gilford
Gilford comes with a wealth of experience, having spent the last decade at BYU. There, he coached cornerbacks, leading ten players to the NFL, including multiple draft picks. His tenure saw impressive results—numerous all-conference honors and a top-ranking secondary. His career began as a graduate assistant at Whittier College, and he eventually played cornerback for BYU.
Lewis Powell
Powell has dedicated 17 seasons to coaching, with 11 at Utah. His focus has always been on defensive linemen. Under his guidance, several players achieved NFL success and All-American honors. Powell’s teams consistently ranked among the nation’s top defenses.
Alex Whittingham
Alex has a solid background in the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs. He was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams and aided many top defensive players. He played at Utah before starting his coaching journey and has built a strong reputation in his roles.
