New Records and Remarkable Performances at the Tyson Invitational
Minneapolis has witnessed a significant moment in collegiate athletics. For the first time in seven years, there’s a new record holder in the Big Ten weight throw. Anthonett Nabwe achieved a personal best with her remarkable throw of 24.67 meters (or about 80 feet and 11 inches) at the Tyson Invitational. This impressive feat not only set a new lifetime record for Nabwe but also broke the long-standing Minnesota school record previously held by Kaitlyn Long, the 2018 NCAA Champion.
During the competition, Nabwe’s standout throw came on her fifth attempt. This made her the first athlete from the University of Minnesota to surpass the 80-foot mark in this event. At one point, she lost the top NCAA ranking to Giavonna Meeks from Texas, who threw 24.49 meters. However, Nabwe quickly regained her lead with her record-breaking attempt. Remarkably, her toss is not only the best in two years but ranks as the 14th-best in the world for women’s weight throw this year.
The Gophers had more than just Nabwe to celebrate. In the 3000 meters, the team showed impressive depth and talent. Sophomore Isabelle Schmitz took first place with a time of 9:07.91. Ali Weimer also shone, finishing as the runner-up with the fourth-fastest time in school history, at 9:08.00. Izzy Roemer contributed as well, achieving the eighth-fastest time for the Gophers with 9:18.83.
Looking ahead, the Golden Gophers will compete in their last indoor meet of the regular season at the Snowshoe Open on February 20. This event sets the stage for the 2026 Big Ten Indoor Championships, happening later this month in Indianapolis.
The excitement around college athletics often generates lively discussions on social media. Fans eagerly follow team updates and highlights to keep up with their favorite athletes. The increasing visibility of events like these may further inspire young athletes to pursue their dreams in track and field.
