University of Montana Athletics: Six Grizzlies Shine on the Podium, 12 Advance to Saturday’s Finals!

The Montana track and field team had an impressive start at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California, taking home six All-Conference honors on the first day. Currently, the men sit in third place with 42 points, while the women are in fourth with 34 points. Northern Arizona is leading the men with 65.5 points.

It was a day of outstanding performances, particularly in the javelin and high jump. Matthew Hockett secured second place in the javelin with a throw of 213-2 feet, while freshman Kyle Iorg took third with 209-4. Both athletes are set to compete at the NCAA First Rounds in College Station, Texas, in two weeks.

In high jump, Patrick Kremer finished as the runner-up after a competitive jump-off. This marks his fourth All-Conference honor at a Big Sky Championship. Despite delays during the event, he managed to perform admirably, clearing 6-7.5 feet before encountering difficulties at 6-9.75 feet.

Head coach Doug Fraley praised the team’s efforts, saying, “It was a really strong day for us… We moved a lot of people through to the finals.” His optimism reflects the team’s robust start, with many athletes ready for their upcoming events.

On the women’s side, Ashley Carroll improved from her fourth place last year to take second in the javelin, leading the competition after her initial throws. Samantha Serex, a pole vault powerhouse, finished third, just shy of her school record.

The track events saw impressive qualifiers as well. Tara Ohlwiler shone in the sprints, clocking the best time in the 200m and securing a spot in the finals for both the 100m and 200m events. Three Montana women made it to the finals in the 400m, with Lily Meskers achieving a personal best.

For the men, freshmen Malaki Simpson and Braden Ankeny progressed to the finals in the 200m, showing maturation as they handled the pressure of competition.

As the championship continues, Montana has promising opportunities tomorrow in both track and field events. This championship not only showcases the athletes’ talents but also highlights the depth of the program.
