The University of New Haven has earned its place as a College of Distinction for the 15th year in a row! This recognition highlights the university’s dedication to student-centered learning and career preparation. Notably, their engineering and business programs received extra applause.
These honors come from the Colleges of Distinction, which evaluates schools based on four key areas: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Community, and Successful Outcomes. The University of New Haven excels in all these categories, thanks to its hands-on learning approach and supportive faculty.
Amna Al-Azdee, a chemical engineering major in her second year, shares her journey. Winning the Innovation Sprint as a freshman and landing an internship at a chemical company has been transformative. Now, she’s at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, working on projects that could propel astronauts to the moon. “Every day was different,” she says, reflecting on her NASA experience. “I knew my efforts were part of something monumental.”
Amna credits her professors for encouraging her to chase big dreams. Their support made a significant difference in her education.
Another student, Kaitlyn Benes, has a unique story. Having completed both her bachelor’s and master’s in chemical engineering through the university’s 4+1 program, she’s now working in nuclear safety engineering. She emphasized how important mentorship and supportive faculty have been for her success. “The personalized attention I received was crucial,” she explained.
Kaitlyn also highlights the emphasis on teamwork and leadership within the university. Her experiences as a Resident Assistant and in technical sororities helped her connect academic lessons with career aspirations. “The practical experience gave me confidence,” she reflected. “I learned how to apply my skills in real-world settings, which employers truly value.”
Moving to the business sector, the Pompea College of Business is also highly regarded. A focus on hands-on experiences, like writing business plans in the first year and engaging in real consulting projects, prepares students for their careers. Sadie Perkins, a business management major, noted how internships have played a major role in her professional growth. “They helped me pinpoint my strengths and areas to improve,” she said.
Sadie also appreciates the diverse perspectives she gains from professors across various business fields. “Every faculty member adds to my understanding, helping me shape a career that aligns with my identity,” she added.
This blend of academic excellence and real-world preparation sets the University apart. The emphasis on applied experience allows students like Sadie and Kaitlyn to enter the job market with a solid foundation. In today’s competitive environment, that readiness is invaluable.
Many students treasured the close-knit community at the University. “I found my closest friends in the Engineering Living Learning Community,” Amna shared. “We supported each other through the ups and downs of our major.”
The recognition from Colleges of Distinction celebrates not just academic success but also a nurturing environment where students grow as individuals and professionals, equipped to tackle future challenges.
