Longtime professor and campus minister Martin J. O’Connor inspired the University of New Haven Class of 2026 with a heartfelt Commencement speech focusing on gratitude, courage, and service. His decades of dedication to the community were recognized with an honorary doctorate and a new endowed scholarship in his name.
More than 1,000 undergraduate candidates celebrated their achievements during the university’s 103rd Commencement at Kathy Zolad Stadium. Under sunny skies, O’Connor, a beloved figure and retired New Haven fire chief, shared three key principles: “Be grateful. Be bold. Be generous.”
University President Jens Frederiksen described O’Connor as “the true conscience of our community,” highlighting his 50-plus years as a Charger. O’Connor began his address with humor, acknowledging that graduates might have expected a celebrity speaker. He then shifted to offer life lessons drawn from his own experiences.
He encouraged students to express real gratitude to those who helped them along their journeys. “A real thank you, not a cheesy text,” he emphasized.
Reflecting on his own time at the university, O’Connor spoke of the caring community that transformed his life. He urged graduates to embrace courage in a rapidly changing world. Quoting Shakespeare, he reminded them not to let fear hold them back from new opportunities.
O’Connor concluded by stressing the importance of using their education to serve others. “The world needs you,” he said, calling for creativity and enthusiasm to navigate the challenges ahead.
Moments later, the university announced the Martin J. O’Connor Scholarship Fund, designed to support students pursuing careers in fire services, honoring O’Connor’s commitment to public service.
Frederiksen highlighted the significance of their degrees, describing them as a “launchpad” for future success. He mentioned the growing importance of AI, urging graduates to become AI-literate to thrive in various sectors.
U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal also spoke, encouraging graduates to approach the future with optimism and compassion. He celebrated the diversity of the Class of 2026 and invited them to explore opportunities in the U.S.
Student speaker Samantha Villa offered a personal reflection, reminding peers to appreciate the present rather than constantly chase goals. She shared a lesson from her grandmother: “Be where your feet are.”
As the ceremony concluded and graduates moved their tassels, themes of gratitude, resilience, and community resonated with everyone. O’Connor’s words echoed in their minds as they stepped into their new futures: “Be grateful. Be bold. Be generous.”
