North Alabama Soccer Players Shine in ASUN Awards

The Atlantic Sun Conference recently honored three players from the University of North Alabama’s soccer team. Graduate goalkeeper Madison Vukas stood out by earning the title of ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year and making First Team All-ASUN.

Junior defender/midfielder Adelyn Speight was named to the Second Team All-ASUN, while freshman midfielder Avery Stojakovich landed a spot on the All-Freshman Team. This marks a strong showing for the program, reflecting its growth in Division I since joining the conference back in 2018.

Vukas, who joined the Lions this year after playing at Bowling Green and Pitt, made an impressive impact. She led the nation with a remarkable .902 save percentage and conceded only 12 goals throughout the season. Vukas set school records for saves and goals-against average, earning herself the nickname ‘Clean Sheet Queen.’

Coach Chris Walker praised her performance, highlighting the challenge of competing against other talented goalkeepers in the league. “Madison has had a fantastic season and thoroughly deserves this award,” he noted.

Speight, in her first year as team captain, solidified her role in defense. She contributed to the team’s success by not only protecting the goal but also facilitating offensive plays. Her vital role helped the Lions achieve nine shutouts this season. Walker described her as a significant reason behind the team’s strong defensive record.

Freshman Stojakovich made a name for herself in her debut season. Starting all 19 matches, she not only impressed with her defensive skills but also contributed offensively with nine shots and two assists. Walker praised her work ethic, stating, “Avery has had a fantastic freshman season…Her energy is infectious.”

The awards reflect a successful comeback for the team, which ended the season with a record of 8-5-6 and a return to the ASUN postseason. With the trio as key players, they helped the Lions secure nine shutouts, vital for the team’s defensive strength.

Overall, the 2025 season marks another milestone for North Alabama, showcasing the talents of its players and the effectiveness of its coaching staff. As they look ahead, the momentum built this year promises an exciting future for the program.
