North Florida Men’s Soccer: A Thrilling Championship Victory
Jacksonville, Fla. – North Florida Men’s Soccer secured their second straight Atlantic Sun Tournament Championship on Saturday, winning a nail-biting match against Bellarmine, 3-2, in overtime. The game took place at Hodges Stadium and was a showcase of determination and skill.
Just a few minutes into overtime, senior defender Alex Barnett initiated a throw-in. The ball bounced off sophomore midfielder Rafa Rios and landed perfectly for junior defender Paul Schacherer, who scored the game-winning goal. This victory marks North Florida’s third championship title in their history, adding to wins in 2015 and 2024.
Sophomore midfielder Anton Khelil was a key player, scoring his second goal in consecutive ASUN Championship Finals. His consistent performance earned him the MVP title for the tournament. Khelil had also contributed significantly in the semifinals, netting a crucial penalty kick that helped the team reach this final match.
Joining Khelil in the spotlight were other standout players, including fifth-year midfielder Rentaro Miyakawa and junior defender Tyler Prebenda. Miyakawa opened the scoring with the first goal of the match in the 19th minute, marking his debut goal for the season. Khelil then quickly followed up with another goal shortly after halftime, extending their lead to 2-0.
North Florida’s redshirt senior goalkeeper Luciano Natoli made crucial saves throughout the game, stopping two of Bellarmine’s 12 shots. His performance added to his previous saves in the semifinal, making it a total of four saves across both championship matches.
Despite North Florida’s strong start, Bellarmine struck back with two quick goals in the last ten minutes of regulation, forcing overtime and heightening the drama. However, Schacherer’s header late in overtime clinched the championship, allowing North Florida to celebrate on their home turf.
As the team looks forward to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament, anticipation builds for the upcoming selection show on November 17. This victory remains a significant moment in their athletic journey, showcasing not only talent but also the spirit and resilience of the team.
