Wichita, Kan. – The UNT volleyball team pulled off an exciting 3-2 win against Wichita State on Sunday at Charles Koch Arena. The match had its ups and downs, but the Mean Green emerged victorious.
Head coach Dave Fleming expressed pride in the team’s effort. “We’re really pleased with this win. It took us a bit to rally in the fifth set, but we came together and did it,” he said.
The Mean Green (17-5, 7-3) dominated the first two sets. However, Wichita State (13-8, 5-4) fought back and pushed the match to a fifth set. They initially led 5-0 before North Texas turned things around, scoring seven points to seize the lead.
Jahniya Jackson and Sidney Soria played key roles in clinching the game. Jackson was on fire in the final set, scoring five kills on just six attacks. Soria, stepping up as the setter, racked up 10 assists in that critical frame.
Star setter Alexa Washington had already achieved her 12th double-double of the season with 21 assists and 12 digs before she left the match late in the fourth set, prompting Fleming to switch to a 5-1 offensive plan with Soria in charge.
“I told Sidney that she’s done this before. She’s an all-state player and we trust her,” Fleming mentioned. Soria responded well, finishing the match with a career-high 32 assists along with eight digs, two kills, and an ace.
Lilly Croshaw also made her mark, leading the team with 17 kills and a solid .302 hitting percentage. She added four blocks. “We thrive in tough matches. Playing as a team really brings out the best in us,” Croshaw said.
This win marked a significant achievement for UNT, making them the 15th team in the program’s history to secure 17 wins. They are now on a six-match winning streak, the second-longest this season.
In a larger context, NCAA volleyball has seen increased competition. According to recent statistics, the league’s average attendance has risen by nearly 10% over the last few years, reflecting growing interest in women’s sports. This trend could provide a boost not just for attendance but also for recruiting talented players.
