University of Oregon faculty have approved a new collective bargaining agreement, putting an end to the possibility of a strike. In an email to union members, Mike Urbancic, the president of United Academics of UO, shared that an impressive 97% of the participating faculty voted in favor of the deal. Currently, about 76% of faculty members have cast their votes.
This agreement was tentatively reached on March 30, just before a strike was set to occur. Though the approval was overwhelming, Urbancic emphasized that improvements are still necessary for future agreements. He stated, “This new collective bargaining agreement is a fairer contract but not yet a fair contract. We still have a lot of work to do to enhance pay and working conditions moving forward.”
Urbancic pointed out that internal financial constraints and unforeseen external challenges limited their accomplishments this time. These factors are often tied to trends in higher education funding, particularly with state support for universities fluctuating over the years.
According to a recent report from the American Association of University Professors, average faculty salaries have struggled to keep pace with inflation, highlighting the ongoing challenges in academia. The report also revealed that many faculty members feel the pressure of heavy workloads and inadequate support, making fair contracts more critical than ever.
