University of Osaka Unveils Cutting-Edge Quantum Computer at Expo 2025: A Leap Towards the Future!

Researchers at the University of Osaka have made a remarkable leap in technology. On July 28, 2025, they launched Japan’s first fully domestic superconducting quantum computer at their Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology (QIQB). This achievement showcases Japan’s ability to independently create and run advanced quantum systems, relying solely on homegrown components. Collaborative support came from RIKEN and companies like ULVAC and Fujitsu.

A key part of this advancement is the open-source software, Open Quantum Toolchain for OPerators & USers (OQTOPUS), designed specifically for working with quantum computers. By using locally-developed technologies, Japan is stepping away from heavily relying on imports in this cutting-edge field.

Visitors to the upcoming Expo 2025 in Osaka can engage with this quantum computer remotely. From August 14 to 20, they will have the chance to execute simple quantum programs and delve into areas like quantum entanglement and computer-generated art, alongside contributions from artists such as Professor Akihiro Kubota.

Japan’s move into quantum computing is significant. According to a report by the International Data Corporation, the global quantum computing market is expected to reach $65 billion by 2030. This technology holds enormous potential for various sectors, including drug discovery, materials science, and machine learning.
