QuickLogic Partners with University of Saskatchewan for Space Tech Innovation

QuickLogic Corporation is making strides in space technology by teaming up with the Semiconductor Technology and Rad-Effects Research Lab (STARR-Lab) at the University of Saskatchewan. They’ve chosen QuickLogic’s embedded FPGA (eFPGA) technology to upgrade their StarRISC Rad-Tolerant RISC-V Microcontroller. This exciting project is backed in part by Globalfoundries’ University Research Program and will utilize advanced 12nm FinFET technology.

This collaboration allows researchers at STARR-Lab to create custom logic blocks and specialized algorithms on devices that can withstand harsh conditions in space and other critical environments. Dr. Li Chen, the lab’s director, expressed enthusiasm about integrating eFPGA capabilities, noting it will open doors for innovation and creativity.

Mao Wang, a senior director at QuickLogic, highlighted the lab’s impressive work with radiation-tolerant technology. Their achievements in producing reliable microcontrollers demonstrate a shared commitment to supporting the space industry. QuickLogic’s eFPGA will enable users to tailor their designs to meet unique mission requirements.

In addition, QuickLogic boasts a rapid delivery timeline for their eFPGA Hard IP, available on new process nodes in just four to six months. Once established, they can customize it further in a matter of weeks, thanks to their proprietary Australis IP Generator. Developers can choose from two FPGA tool suites, including Aurora, an open-source option.

The partnership is part of a broader trend where academic institutions and tech companies join forces to drive innovation in sectors like aerospace. According to a recent survey by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, collaborations between universities and tech firms have increased by over 30% in the last five years, reflecting a growing recognition of the importance of research in developing new technologies.
