University of Texas Launches Free Food Recovery Program to Combat Food Waste and Feed Students

UT Austin has launched an exciting program this semester that lets students, staff, and faculty access free leftover food from campus events. This initiative aims to connect people with surplus food and cut down on waste.

Here’s how it works: Event hosts can alert members of the campus community when they have leftovers. Those interested have just 30 minutes to grab what’s available on a first-come, first-served basis. To join, users just need to enable notifications on the MyUT Austin app.

So far, over 850 people have signed up for this channel. Valerie Nies, director of organizational communications for campus operations, said this is a pilot program to see what works and what needs tweaking. The goal? To prevent perfectly good food from being tossed out.

Nies noted that many times, leftover food goes straight to the trash simply because there wasn’t an easy way to notify others that it was available. This program also serves to fight food insecurity. A 2020 survey revealed that 42% of UT students experienced food insecurity, and this initiative hopes to help bridge that gap.

Finance junior Lisa Hadi, who previously worked with UT Dining, shared her thoughts on the food waste issue. She pointed out that UT has great potential to partner with local vendors, something she’s seen interest in from Austin restaurants who want to get involved.

On social media, Hadi’s video about the free food program gained unexpected traction, highlighting a community need for accessible food options.

Amanda Rohlich, a food policy advisor with the City of Austin, emphasized how crucial this program is for students adjusting to living independently and managing budgets. She mentioned that many overlook the fact that this population is particularly vulnerable to food insecurity.

Programs like this are more than just about food; they are a step toward building a supportive community and tackling waste. It’s a win-win for both students and the environment. As universities across the country explore similar efforts, UT Austin is paving the way for innovative solutions.
