Charmelle Green: A Rising Star in College Athletics
Charmelle Green, Utah Athletics’ Deputy A.D. and Chief Operating Officer, has gained recognition by being named to Silver Waves Media’s Top 100 Rising Athletics Directors for 2026. Founded in 2020, Silver Waves Media highlights achievements in college sports, particularly in basketball.
Green, who is in her sixth year at Utah, has a long history in college athletics. A former All-American softball player at Utah, she has also spent ten years each at Penn State and Notre Dame before returning to her alma mater. Her career spans nearly 30 years, showcasing her commitment and expertise in college athletics.
Mark Harlan, the Athletics Director, praised Green’s leadership. He emphasized her dedication to the well-being of student-athletes and her influential role within the Big 12 Conference. “Charmelle’s impact goes beyond our campus,” he noted, highlighting her significant contributions to collegiate sports.
As Deputy A.D. and COO, Green oversees daily operations in the Utah Athletics Department. This means she manages academics, compliance, facilities, and student-athlete wellness. Her efforts led to the launch of Utes Productions, a new digital broadcast unit aimed at enhancing game coverage as Utah transitions to the Big 12 Conference in 2024.
Green’s responsibilities also extend to the Big 12 Conference, where she collaborates with athletic directors and committees. She serves as the sport supervisor for women’s basketball and supports men’s basketball.
Before her time at Utah, Green was a Senior Associate A.D. at Penn State, focusing on student-athlete performance and welfare. She oversaw various sports and implemented programs promoting student development and wellness. At Notre Dame, she led efforts to create a balanced experience for student-athletes, emphasizing academic and personal growth.
Green’s journey in college athletics began as an assistant softball coach before she rose to significant administrative roles. Her background as an All-American player informs her approach today, making her a valuable voice in athletic administration.
In recent years, the landscape of college athletics has evolved significantly. Student-athlete well-being and development have become central issues, especially in light of the pandemic. According to a 2023 survey by the NCAA, nearly 70% of student-athletes reported increased stress levels, highlighting the need for proactive measures in supporting their mental health.
Green holds a degree in mass communications and a master’s in secondary education. She is married to Dr. Matthew E. Mooney, who also contributes to the University of Utah.
