Cary, N.C. – Monday night was a historic moment for the Washington Huskies soccer team, as they clinched their first national title by defeating NC State 3-2 in overtime.
The game started strong for the Huskies, who quickly jumped to a 2-0 lead. However, NC State showed resilience by scoring twice in the second half, bringing the game to overtime. In a thrilling finish, Harrison Bertos scored just 1:54 into overtime to secure the win.
Head Coach Jamie Clark praised both teams after the game, stating, “All 10,000 fans witnessed a spectacle. NC State didn’t back down, and they truly pushed us to our limits.”
The match was closely contested. Washington took 13 shots, with nine hitting the target, while NC State had 17 shots and seven on goal. “Credit to them; I thought they were the best team in the country. We had to beat the best in the final,” Clark added.
Zach Ramsey ignited the Huskies’ scoring in the first half, netting his second goal of the College Cup. The Huskies followed up with another goal from Joe Dale in the 62nd minute, assisted by Richie Aman. Aman’s assist brought his season total to 14, the second-highest in school history.
The game turned tense as NC State found two goals late in the match. But the Huskies remained determined. Moments into overtime, Bertos found the net with a precise pass from Egor Akulov. Although the goal was initially subject to video review for offside, it was upheld.
Clark highlighted his team’s determination, “They executed beautifully. Even in overtime, they knew a moment was left to win.”
The Huskies’ defense also played a critical role, with Jadon Bowton making five key saves. Connor Lofy, despite battling the flu, made his 24th start of the season.
As they celebrate this achievement, the Huskies also hit a milestone with six consecutive victories, marking a season of remarkable resilience and teamwork.
