Husky Freshman Hannes Steinbach Shines in All-Big Ten Honors
As the Washington men’s basketball team prepares for the Big Ten Tournament opener against USC, rookie star Hannes Steinbach is making headlines. He has earned All-Big Ten recognition, being named to the Third Team by coaches and media, and also landing a spot on the All-Freshman Team. This is a significant achievement, as he’s the first player from Washington to earn All-Big Ten honors.
Steinbach, a freshman from Würzburg, Germany, is having an impressive season. He has recorded 20 double-doubles in just 28 games, the most for any Big Ten freshman since the 1996-97 season. His performance stands out, especially against tough opponents, with many of his best games coming during critical matchups.
Currently, he ranks second in the nation with an average of 11.6 rebounds per game and seventh in the Big Ten with 18.6 points per game. If he maintains this pace, he could become the first Husky freshman to average a double-double over the entire season—an impressive feat that has only been achieved by 18 players in the program’s history.
In addition to Steinbach’s accolades, sophomore guard Zoom Diallo represents Washington on the Big Ten All-Sportsmanship Team, highlighting the team’s commitment to fair play.
The Washington Huskies, seeded No. 12 in the tournament, will face No. 13 seed USC at approximately 11:30 a.m. PT. The game will be streamed on Peacock and broadcast on NBCSN.
