The university’s payroll system for student workers is evolving. Last November, they announced a transition from Self-Serve Banner to a new system, Paycom. This change was supposed to take effect on December 16, but it got delayed.
As of February 1, payments are now processed through Paycom, but students still submit their hours using Self-Serve Banner. Claire Moore from Human Resources explained that this delay helps manage campus resources better and supports student supervisors during the transition. Students were informed about this hold-up via email on December 23.
The complete switch to Paycom, including all timesheets, is planned for this summer and next fall, according to Sam Tek from Human Resources. This postponement confused some student employees, especially Chloe Terrell’s peer tutors. While Terrell worried about training her team on the new system, she believes the extra time will be beneficial.
To help everyone get accustomed to Paycom, Moore mentioned there will be both online and in-person training sessions. Details on these will arrive later this spring. Moore hopes the full transition will make payments smoother for student workers. She noted, “We decided to update to the new payroll system to comply with labor laws and state regulations. Self-Serve Banner wasn’t as effective as it used to be.”
Recent studies show that payroll systems can significantly impact job satisfaction among student employees. A survey by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA) found that 70% of students prefer streamlined payroll systems for better clarity and efficiency. These findings underline the importance of making this shift successfully.
