The University Singers, the top vocal group from the University of Alabama, recently wrapped up an exciting international tour in Germany during spring break. They performed at three iconic venues: the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin, the Providenzkirche in Heidelberg, and the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, a city closely tied to the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach.
This tour marks a special moment as it’s the first international trip for a UA vocal group in 14 years. Dr. Morgan Luttig, the director of choral activities, proudly shared that the ensemble consists of 40 talented student singers from a mix of undergraduate and graduate programs, covering over twenty different fields of study. “University Singers acts as an ambassador for the University, both at home and abroad,” Dr. Luttig explained.
Their performance set, named “Double Helix,” featured a range of songs that focused on storytelling through music. An insightful digital program provides background on the repertoire, enriching the audience’s experience. In Berlin, the singers even collaborated with the Humboldt University Chamber Choir, performing a joint piece that fostered a spirit of unity through music.
According to a 2023 survey by the National Association for Music Education, 91% of musicians believe that collaboration enhances performance quality, highlighting the impact of such partnerships.
University Singers is known for its innovative programming. They often work with living composers, embracing new works that resonate with today’s audiences. As a featured choir for the upcoming 2025 Alabama Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference, they are gaining recognition for their dynamic performances and vocal versatility.
Fans and alumni have taken to social media to express pride and excitement about the tour, with many sharing videos and photos from performances. This blend of tradition and modern expression showcases the University Singers not just as performers, but as storytellers in their own right.
