University Softball’s Incredible Journey: Road to the CIF-SS Finals!

The University High softball team has long struggled in the shadows, but this season feels different. For the first time in years, they’re making waves in the CIF Southern Section championships with a chance to shine.

After a solid 10-2 win over Ramona Convent, the Trojans are gearing up for their first championship game. They’ll face the third-seeded Adelanto at Bill Barber Park in Irvine, which is nearly a home field for them.

This year has been about remarkable comebacks. Under the leadership of second-year coach Merissa Guzman, the Trojans, who don’t have any seniors on the team, are the surprise finalists. With only two wins in the Pacific Coast League so far, they’re defying expectations, boasting an impressive five-game win streak and winning seven of their last nine games. Excluding a tough loss to top-ranked Rosary Academy, they have outscored opponents 115-11 in this hot streak.

Guzman noticed a fire in her players from day one. "This group showed a real desire to improve," she said. They even split into two teams after years without a junior varsity squad.

The talent on the team runs deep, especially with three freshman starters: first baseman Sienna Gillen, left fielder Jessica Hu, and right fielder Maiko Shiraiwa. They’ve added valuable depth to the lineup. Junior Carson Cruz, who has earned the title of all-league pitcher and team MVP, has been a critical player too, recently pitching a strong game against Ramona.

The younger players, including sophomores like center fielder Sophia Weinberg and third baseman Alexandra McBride, are also stepping up. Weinberg, for example, has scored 48 runs this season, proving her worth in the lineup.

“They’re resilient and coachable,” Guzman said. Impressively, almost every player maintains a GPA of 3.5 or higher. “They not only excel in softball, but they’re also doing great academically.”

As they gear up for next week’s championship game, Guzman emphasizes the importance of teamwork. “Every player matters,” she insists. Whether on the field or from the bench, every role is crucial.

With their sights set on a championship and a promising future ahead, the Trojans are building momentum. The journey has been inspiring, and fans are eager to see how high they can fly.
