DENVER – The moment Delaney Lauer’s final kill hit the floor, the emotion was clear for University High School volleyball coach Jared Rudiger. A year ago, he watched from the stands as his team struggled at the Class 4A state tournament. Now, he was back on the court, guiding the Bulldogs to a stunning victory over Windsor, winning in straight sets: 25-17, 25-23, 25-16. This marked the second state championship for the program, a monumental achievement.
“It’s been a tough journey, but also a rewarding one,” Rudiger said after the match. “This win means so much to me and this team.” His return to coaching was fueled by a deep connection to his players, including his daughter Kenley, who plays alongside star hitter Lauer. Lauer had an impressive season, racking up over 300 kills.
The Bulldogs, with a record of 24-5, have now joined an elite group of Colorado 4A champions, becoming the fifth team to win since 2008. Past champions like Cheyenne Mountain and Lewis-Palmer have set a high standard, but the Bulldogs are ready to make their mark.
“There’s no team in Colorado like us, especially up north,” Lauer said confidently. “Winning is an amazing feeling.” The team’s strong performance throughout the match kept them in the lead, allowing them to play freely without the fear of mistakes. “Having faced Windsor before helped us prepare for this moment,” she added.
This victory is particularly sweet as it’s the Bulldogs’ first title since they claimed the 3A championship in 2021. Back then, they had to fight through a challenging match against Lamar. This time, they took control from the very beginning, showcasing their skill and unity.
Coach Rudiger’s return and the team’s unity have clearly paid off. Winning this championship not only reflects their hard work but also symbolizes their resilience. The Bulldogs look poised to build on this success and set new records for the program. Just as history often repeats itself in sports, the future for University volleyball seems bright.
