Keychron offers a fantastic range of mechanical keyboards, from full-size models to specialized designs. Their Q and V Series are quite popular, especially the latest Ultra models, which have a lot to offer for both casual users and hardcore enthusiasts.
I’ve had the chance to test two Ultra keyboards: the Keychron V5 Ultra 8K and the Keychron Q1 Ultra 8K. The V5, priced at $119.99, is almost a full-size keyboard with a numpad and is made from plastic. In contrast, the Q1, costing $229.99, is a 75% layout made from sturdy aluminum. Both are excellent, but the Q1 feels more premium and has a better typing experience.
These Ultra models feature the latest 8,000Hz polling rate, which means faster response times, particularly beneficial for gamers. While many users might not notice this slight improvement, it’s a nice touch. The Ultra keyboards also run on ZMK firmware, popular among keyboard enthusiasts for customizability, though some might find it a bit daunting to set up.
One standout feature is their incredible battery life. Keychron claims up to 660 hours of use, which is four times longer than their previous models. If you use your keyboard lightly, you’ll only need to recharge it a few times a year! This efficiency is impressive given that many mechanical keyboards require charging every couple of weeks.
Typing on the Ultras feels even better than past models. They come with upgraded stabilizers for larger keys, providing a smoother experience. The new Silk POM switches (available in various styles) help reduce scratchiness and improve sound quality during typing. The V5’s new brown switches offer a deeper, crisper sound than previous versions, which enhances the typing experience.
Interestingly, there’s been a growing trend on social media around these keyboards. Users are showing off their setups, sharing tips for customization, and discussing the quality between different models, leading to increased interest in mechanical keyboards overall.
Seems like Keychron is paving the way for other brands to adopt similar energy-efficient technologies and customizable firmware solutions! As more manufacturers explore these options, we can expect exciting advancements in mechanical keyboards in the future.
