On April 29, something exciting happened for Pathfinder fans. A Barnes & Noble product page revealed two upcoming books: Monster Core 2 and Lost Omens: Draconic Codex. Wargamer reached out to Paizo, the publisher, for more details. Luis Loza, the creative director, expressed that these books allow them to explore and expand the lore around monsters. Expect richer dragon stories, thrilling combat scenarios, and even new character options, including the chance to play as a dragon!

Eleanor Ferron, a senior developer at Paizo, highlighted a unique addition to the game: Dragonets. These are small dragons, either the size of a pigeon or up to three feet long. They may not be as impressive as larger dragons, but they bring their charm and fun to the game. Players can also look forward to other dragon types like the homing drake, known for being a beloved pet or racing companion.

The love for dragons isn’t unique to Pathfinder. Other games, notably Dungeons & Dragons, are tapping into the dragon craze too. D&D’s upcoming release includes an anthology of dragon-themed adventures, showcasing the universal appeal of these mythical creatures.

Paizo’s Draconic Codex responds to player demand for more dragon lore. Ferron pointed out that due to space limitations in previous books, dragons were often simplified. The Codex aims to change that. Players can learn about a dragon’s diet, personality, and even their favorite treasures.

Loza emphasized that the Draconic Codex isn’t just about existing dragon types. It allows them to create entirely new kinds of dragons, giving them fresh abilities and characteristics. Notably, each type of dragon comes with its unique "archdragon," which serves as the strongest in its category, adding depth to gameplay.

In the broader context, Monster Core 2 continues this creative exploration. It introduces numerous classic creatures with a Pathfinder twist. One new addition is the divoynik, a crafty shapeshifter that can hypnotize and extract information from its targets.

Joshua Birdsong, another designer at Paizo, pointed out that these creatures serve as excellent storytelling tools for Game Masters (GMs). For instance, the kadamel, a celestial guardian, can create weapons and wield divine magic, offering exciting plot possibilities, whether it’s battling beside players or negotiating for passage to another realm.

The two books are expected to be released on November 5, 2025. As the Pathfinder community eagerly anticipates these titles, it’s clear that the fascination with dragons and monster lore will continue to ignite imaginations in tabletop RPGs.
