NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team, ranked No. 19/21, had an impressive home opener, defeating Furman 96-48.

The Commodores displayed a strong offensive strategy with seven players scoring eight or more points. They achieved a shooting success rate of 56.1%, including 10 successful three-pointers. Defensively, Vanderbilt excelled by forcing 28 turnovers and limiting Furman to 33.3% shooting.

With this win, Vanderbilt is now 2-0 for the season. This marks the first time in nearly a decade that they’ve opened four consecutive seasons with back-to-back wins.

Graduate Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda led the team with 16 points, achieving her first double-figure scoring game with Vanderbilt. She also matched her career high with four assists and grabbed five rebounds.

Sophomore Mikayla Blakes continued her scoring streak with 15 points. This marks her 21st consecutive game scoring in double digits. She’s been a key player for Vanderbilt, scoring double figures in 34 of 35 games played.

Senior Justine Pissott contributed 13 points, hitting three three-pointers. Meanwhile, junior Aiyana Mitchell scored 12 points from the bench, marking the first time she scored double digits in consecutive games.

Freshman Aubrey Galvan had a standout performance with 11 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds. Additionally, senior Jada Brown scored 10 points, marking her first double-digit game since her freshman year.

Vanderbilt’s home record is a strong 45-4, and they’ve won their first home game five times under head coach Shea Ralph. The team continues to build momentum, outscoring Furman 50-14 in the paint and generating 41 points off turnovers.

Head coach Shea Ralph commented on the game, saying, “It was good to be back home. We had a lot of travel and we’re still shaking off the rust, but we had great contributions from everyone.”

Looking ahead, the Commodores will face Austin Peay on Wednesday at 6 p.m. CT.
