Wolf Man is set to thrill viewers in 2025.
This film, directed by Leigh Whannell, features a talented cast including Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, Matilda Firth, and Sam Jaeger.
Synopsis: A family retreats to a quiet farmhouse only to encounter a mysterious beast. As danger creeps in, the father begins a frightening transformation.
The story follows Grady (Sam Jaeger) and his son Blake (Christopher Abbott, as an adult). During a hunting trip in the Oregon woods, Grady shares that “dying is the easiest thing to do,” a lesson shaped by a harsh view of masculinity. He is fixated on an odd man rumored to have an animal-like disease—setting the stage for the film’s eerie premise.
Fast forward to three decades later: Blake, now a journalist, struggles with his father’s aggressive traits. He’s married to Charlotte (Julia Garner) and has a daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth). Although he loves them, Blake often loses his temper, echoing his father’s behavior.
There’s tension in Blake’s marriage. He asks Charlotte to take a work call away from him while grappling with the news of his father’s death. His fears of repeating his father’s mistakes loom over him. How much of Grady’s influence has he absorbed, and can he change?
Whannell efficiently sketches out character dynamics before the horror kicks in. On a summer vacation back in Oregon, the family encounters a wolf man before even reaching their destination. A gripping scene has their moving truck precariously hanging from tree branches, while Blake fights to protect his family. Unbeknownst to him, he’s about to inherit more than just bad traits—he’s infected by the same animalistic curse.
While the film’s message is clear and somewhat predictable, Wolf Man makes up for it with strong visuals and sound design that pull you into Blake’s scary reality. The transformation of Blake is portrayed with impressive practical effects, making the horror feel real and personal. Matilda Firth shines as a scared but loving daughter, adding heart to the thrills.
At 103 minutes, the movie moves quickly, balancing suspense with character-driven themes. Although some character development is quick, the film keeps its pace, delivering relentless horror while staying emotionally grounded.
