In New York, DreamWorks Animation’s “Dog Man” has made a splash at the box office, earning $36 million in its opening weekend. This makes it the biggest debut film of 2025 so far.
Based on the beloved graphic novels by Dav Pilkey, the film was produced for a reasonable budget of $40 million, ensuring it will likely turn a profit. Audiences have responded positively, giving it an “A” CinemaScore.
Only one animated feature, “Kung Fu Panda 3,” has opened better in January, back in 2016. However, “Dog Man” faced some challenges internationally, bringing in $4.2 million from 29 global markets. The film was directed by Peter Hastings and features a voice cast that includes Pete Davidson, Lil Rel Howery, and Isla Fisher.
Family films continue to perform well at the box office. Last year, PG-rated movies raked in $2.9 billion, making up 33% of ticket sales. This trend appears to be continuing in 2025. Disney’s “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which has topped the box office three times in January, held on strong in its seventh week, earning $6.1 million and bringing its worldwide total to $653 million.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for Comscore, noted that the wave of PG animated family films that started in 2024 is still going strong into this year.
Another film, the horror comedy “Companion,” opened with $9.5 million across 3,285 locations. Directed by Drew Hancock, it follows a group of friends on a weekend trip to a lake. Made for just $10 million, “Companion” has received good reviews, boasting a 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “B+” CinemaScore, which may help it attract more viewers in the upcoming weeks.
In a surprising twist, last week’s top film, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk,” saw a significant drop in earnings, falling to fifth place with $5.6 million. The film has made $20.9 million domestically for Lionsgate.
One notable success this year is Sony Pictures’ “One of Them Days,” an R-rated comedy starring Keke Palmer and SZA. Despite the tough climate for comedies in theaters, this film has performed well, earning $5.6 million over the weekend and totaling $34.5 million after three weeks, a solid achievement for its $14 million budget.
As the weekend came to a close, here are the estimated box office numbers for the top films in the U.S. and Canada:
