Synopsis: Dao Ma is the “second most wanted fugitive.” Entrusted by his benefactor, the chief of the Mo clan, he must escort the “most wanted fugitive” to safety in Chang’an.
Yuen Woo-ping’s Blades of the Guardians delivers non-stop excitement. It proudly stands out in the wuxia martial arts genre, packed with swift action and breathtaking sequences.
At 80 years old, Yuen proves he’s still a powerhouse behind the camera. With years of experience, a talented cast, and a solid budget, he crafts an action film that rivals his past classics.
Dao Ma, played by Wu Jing, is a bounty hunter working with his young nephew, Xiao Qi. Their lives are shaken when Lao Mo, Dao Ma’s benefactor, asks him to protect the notorious Zhi Shilang while navigating the dangers of the desert.
Ayuya, Lao Mo’s daughter, joins them. She recently ended her engagement with a powerful leader, Xeyi Xuan. As the group travels, they encounter a mysterious swordsman and political tensions rise. One of Dao Ma’s former allies, Di Ting, complicates matters as he aims to capture Zhi Shilang.
While the plot provides a backdrop, the real focus is on the gripping fight scenes. This film delights audiences by returning to a more grounded style of martial arts. The choreography, unlike the shaky cam sequences of earlier films, feels authentic and impressive.
Jet Li graces the screen with a striking appearance just 20 minutes in, creating an unforgettable fight scene. His brief presence is a testament to the film’s strength; there’s plenty more to enjoy after he departs.
Yuen also enhances the visual storytelling by showcasing lesser-seen parts of China. In one standout scene reminiscent of Mad Max: Fury Road, the characters brave a sandstorm while engaging in a thrilling sword fight. This mix of practical and visual effects wraps the film in an immersive atmosphere.
Despite a complex plot that sometimes blurs character lines, the action remains captivating. Viewers can overlook any confusion when awed by remarkable scenes, like a lady wielding arrows from horseback.
The cast boosts the film further. Wu brings a strong, heroic presence. Yu evolves from a supporting role to a co-lead, captivating viewers with her transformation. Lijun shines as a fierce and capable force, while Li and Leung deliver powerful performances.
Blades of the Guardians is an absolute treat. Don’t fret about the intricate plot details; just immerse yourself in the thrilling martial arts adventure.
