After another playoff exit, Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards is determined to up his game this summer. Following Minnesota’s disappointing 124-94 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Edwards said, “I’m going to work my butt off this summer. Nobody’s going to work harder than me.”
Edwards, just 23, has shown tremendous potential, averaging 27.6 points during the regular season. Yet, in the Western Conference finals, the Thunder limited him significantly, holding him to under 20 points in three of the five games.
In the decisive Game 5, he scored only 19 points on poor shooting (7-for-18 overall, 1-for-7 from three). The Timberwolves struggled from the start, trailing 26-9 after the first quarter. Edwards scored six of those nine points while the rest of the team only managed three, shooting a dismal 1-for-15.
“They were the better team,” Edwards said. “We lost the game, we lost the series.”
The Timberwolves had trouble connecting on the court. Coach Chris Finch noted their lack of cohesion, saying, “All credit to the Thunder. They played outstanding. We came up short.” Committing 21 turnovers led to 18 easy points for Oklahoma City.
Alongside Edwards, other players struggled too. Julius Randle had a decent game with 24 points but faced challenges with his turnovers. Meanwhile, Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Jaden McDaniels had poor outings, each failing to score effectively.
Looking back, the Timberwolves had a strong finish to the season, winning 25 of their last 31 games and pulling off upset victories over the Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors in the playoffs. However, their momentum faltered in the finals. Despite the disappointing end, Edwards reflected positively on the season, saying, “We did pretty good this year, man. We just came up short again.”
Edwards is not alone in his aspirations. Recent reports highlight that younger players, like him, are increasingly pivotal in the NBA. As teams lean towards building around their emerging stars, Edwards is positioned well for the future. With a fresh mindset and future training ahead, he’s on track to make big strides next season.
Social media buzz has been all about Edwards lately. Fans across platforms like Twitter and Instagram are expressing their faith in him, rallying around the idea that he will rise to the occasion. Some even compare his potential to other great players who once took time to mature before hitting their peak.
As the Timberwolves reflect on their season, there’s a mix of regret and hope. Edwards understands that growth takes time and is clearly ready to take on the challenge ahead. “I’ll try again next year,” he affirmed, holding onto the belief that the best is yet to come.
