Pet Detective: A Mixed Bag of Fun and Humor
Movies can be fun and also funny, but they don’t always go hand in hand. “Pet Detective,” directed by Praneesh Vijayan, tries to balance both but often falters.
The story follows Jose Alula, a private detective played by Renji Panicker. After a scare with a dangerous criminal, he returns to Kerala and sets up a detective agency. His son, Tony (played by Sharafudheen), runs the day-to-day operations. While Tony is keen to prove himself, he struggles to solve even simple cases. The plot takes a twist when he and his assistant, Sanoop (Joemon Jyothir), get involved in a mysterious disappearance linked to a smuggling ring of rare fish.
Vijayan’s direction brings an interesting visual style that hooks the audience early on. However, the script often feels disjointed. Transitioning from the backstory of Jose to Tony’s challenges seems awkward, making the film lose its rhythm. Characters appear abruptly, leaving viewers confused without any introduction.
Despite the plot’s problems, the moments of humor save it from becoming tedious. Sharafudheen shines as Tony, and his chemistry with the supporting cast brings charm to their interactions. However, the quirky characters aren’t woven tightly into the story, so they feel like mere comic relief rather than integral parts of the narrative.
There are echoes of classic comedies in “Pet Detective,” reminiscent of films like “CID Moosa” and “Vettam.” Those movies embraced absurdity, whereas “Pet Detective” seems hesitant, which keeps it from reaching its potential. The jokes also don’t always land as intended, making sections feel forced rather than funny.
Visually, Anend C Chandran’s cinematography adds flair, and Rajesh Murugesan’s music enhances the experience at key moments. Editing by Abhinav Sunder Nayak is sharp, but some transitions feel clunky, hindering overall flow.
In the realm of entertainment that mixes humor with crime, “Pet Detective” falls short of greats in the genre, yet it still makes an earnest attempt. Critics pointed out that with better writing and character development, the film could have unlocked its true potential.
