When I dive into intricate role-playing games, I usually prefer to chat my way through challenges. However, Avowed has pleasantly surprised me. It’s a blast playing a wizard equipped with a gun.

At first, I found Avowed’s combat system quite daunting. I chose a character with high perception and intelligence, which unlocked some intriguing dialogue options. It seemed easier to avoid battles entirely and just use my sword and shield.

That changed the moment I got my hands on a gun, thanks to some tips from Chris Person. The idea of wielding a gun in a fantasy setting is both funny and exciting. What’s even cooler? You can dual-wield almost any combo of weapons. I love pairing a grimoire with a pistol for an exhilarating mix of magic and firepower. When enemies charge at me in a tight space, I can trap them with a spell, unleash flames, and watch them burn while dealing damage over time. And just for good measure, I finish them off with a shot to the head.

Surprisingly, I’m eager to jump back into combat in Avowed. It’s not just about burning foes and blasting them away; the interaction of elemental magic with my team and the environment adds a whole new layer. If I freeze an enemy, my buddies can smash them into bits. My ice spell can even freeze water, creating platforms to reach sniping spots. The more I play, the more options I find. One unique pistol delivers electric damage and can spread shock to nearby foes. I can’t get enough of combining electrocution with my other combat tricks in the Living Lands.

That said, talking my way out of trouble is still a blast in Avowed. With such rich conversation trees, I’ll keep trying to dodge fights. But hey, as Teddy Roosevelt once said—speak softly, and carry a big stick.
