Unleashing Potential: How Tulare Union High School Basketball Players Find Extra Motivation

The atmosphere in the Tulare Union Gym is buzzing with excitement. Coach Mark Hatton is optimistic. “We’ve known for a couple of years that this was going to be our year,” he shares with a smile.

After an early exit from the football playoffs, the team shifted its focus to basketball. Coach Hatton believes this change has benefited them. “We got the kids a bit earlier, and it shows on the floor,” he says.

All five starters on the basketball team are sophomores or juniors from the football squad. They carry the lessons from their football season, using it as motivation. Shauntai Kimble reflects, “Football didn’t end the way we wanted, but we’re expecting big things this year.” Nehimiah Moreno adds, “I keep that feeling inside me to push harder.” Buddy Lockard notes, “We came to basketball ready for the playoffs.” Demaje Riley points out that they maintain the same chemistry from football, which makes their game stronger.

On the basketball court, their play is fast-paced. Coach Hatton describes them as “the fastest you’ll see.” Their agility gives the team an edge. Riley, who has committed to play football at UCLA, says, “Nobody has the speed we have in the Valley.” His teammate, Brayden Stevenson, plans to join the Nevada Wolf Pack for football and is eager to score. “If coach says get a bucket, I’m going for it,” he states.

This season, they’ve showcased impressive teamwork, combining for nearly 40 points per game. With a perfect start of 15-0, it’s their best since 2006. Stevenson believes, “If we go fast, we’ll win games.” Now with a record of 17-2, Tulare is on track for the playoffs. Coach Hatton sums it up, “Their hearts are huge. We’ll take on anyone, no matter their size.” This year could be their year for victory.
