Subaru has introduced exciting changes for its 2026 SUPER GT competitor. At the recent Tokyo Auto Salon, they announced that the No. 61 Subaru BRZ will feature a brand new three-litre twin-turbo flat-six engine. This engine builds on the design of the iconic EG33 unit from the 1990s SVX coupe.
According to Subaru, the larger engine and its new cylinder layout will boost the car’s performance, enhancing the BRZ’s famous cornering ability. This makes the vehicle more competitive on the track. The new setup has already been tested during a GT Entrants’ Association event at Motegi last October.
The driving lineup will remain the same, with Takuto Iguchi and Hideki Yamauchi behind the wheel, while Shunji Okumoto will be the reserve driver. Masahiro Ozawa continues as general manager. Although the tire supplier hasn’t been officially named, it’s likely that they will stick with Dunlop.
The 2025 season saw the revamped BRZ show promise, finishing ninth in the GT300 standings. It had impressive second-place finishes at Suzuka and Motegi, but a last-lap engine issue prevented a win at Fuji.
Subaru’s ambitions extend beyond SUPER GT. They will field an upgraded WRX NBR Challenge car at the Nürburgring 24, striving to win the SP4T class and compete against those in the SP8T class. The same drivers from SUPER GT will join this effort.
In Super Taikyu, Iguchi and Yamauchi will race a new car based on the Performance-B STI concept, utilizing low-carbon gasoline in its turbo engine.
These developments come at a time when car manufacturers are increasingly focusing on sustainability and performance. A recent survey showed that 68% of drivers prefer vehicles that are both powerful and environmentally friendly. As Subaru gears up for this new chapter, fans can expect an exciting fusion of innovation and racing heritage.
