A Powerful Nor’easter Hits the Northeast
A massive nor’easter has recently blanketed much of the Northeast with nearly three feet of snow in some areas. Meteorologists are calling this storm one of the strongest in a decade, boasting unique characteristics like thundersnow and lightning—rare sights in winter storms.
This storm formed under perfect conditions. According to Owen Shieh, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, the temperatures were just right for creating heavy, wet snow. If it were warmer, the precipitation wouldn’t have fallen as snow. If it were colder, there wouldn’t have been enough moisture.
Jeff Masters from Weather Underground noted that the storm’s path was ideal, too. If it had shifted slightly inland, it would have lost warmth; if it had gone further out to sea, the heaviest snow would have fallen over water.
Ryan Maue, a private meteorologist, expressed fascination at how nature aligns to produce such strong storms. He remarked that this one ranks among the most impressive in history.
Snow Totals Are Record-Breaking
Providence, Rhode Island, set a new all-time snowfall record with 33.5 inches, surpassing a 1978 record. Warwick, Rhode Island, saw the highest measurement at 36.2 inches. Other areas, like Islip Airport and parts of Massachusetts, reported over 30 inches. Central Park recorded more than 19 inches, while Philadelphia noted 14 inches.
The storm also brought strong winds, with speeds hitting 83 mph in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Heavy, wet snow can be physically demanding and dangerous. Shieh emphasized the risk of overexertion while shoveling, urging people to take frequent breaks.
Understanding the Storm’s Intensity
Meteorologists measure storm strength by monitoring atmospheric pressure. This storm dropped 39 millibars within 24 hours, qualifying it as a “bomb cyclone.” Maue described it as “a hurricane with snow,” showing its massive power.
In light of climate change, researchers like MIT’s Judah Cohen have indicated that such storms are becoming stronger. A study from last year revealed that the strongest nor’easters are intensifying due to warming conditions.
