Unleashing the Power: A Deep Dive into ‘The Smashing Machine’ – A Must-See MMA Drama Review!

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shines in his role as Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, a film capturing the life of this legendary UFC fighter. It’s a true story about a man who fights for fame and fortune, and it showcases Johnson’s impressive acting skills.

I’m not usually excited about Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) or ultimate fighting. To me, it’s hard to understand the appeal of watching people hurt each other. But this film took me on a journey, allowing me to see Kerr not just as a fighter but as a complex person. Before this, I didn’t know much about Kerr, despite a documentary called The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr from 2002.

Emily Blunt also delivers a stellar performance as Kerr’s girlfriend, Dawn. Her character adds depth to the story, often impacting Kerr’s decisions. Ryan Bader, a real MMA fighter, plays Kerr’s best friend, and the chemistry among the cast elevates the film’s quality.

Directed by Benny Safdie, the movie explores Kerr’s transition from pro wrestling to the chaotic early days of UFC. Most of the action unfolds at Japanese Pride fighting events, giving a peek into that world.

The soundtrack stands out as well. Bruce Springsteen’s Jungleland and Frank Sinatra’s My Way are used in surprising ways that enhance the film’s emotional weight.

While the film is based on real events, its conclusion feels a bit flat compared to traditional sports films like Rocky, which leaves viewers feeling fulfilled.

For fans of The Rock, this film marks an important chapter in his career. If you’re curious about UFC, this offers a glimpse into that world. But be prepared—it does remind us that these fighters, no matter how tough, are still human.
