Unleashing Tomorrow’s Innovators: Highlights from NMU’s Inaugural Future Health Leaders Camp

MARQUETTE, Mich. – A unique camp at Northern Michigan University is inspiring high school students from the Upper Peninsula to explore careers in healthcare.

This week, thirty-six students are getting a firsthand look at various medical professions. They’ll leave the camp with CPR and First Aid certifications, which are important skills for anyone looking to enter the health field.

One student, Naomi Baker, is entering 9th grade at Calumet High School this fall. Initially interested in becoming a dental hygienist, she now dreams of attending medical school with a focus on cardiology. “This camp has opened my eyes,” she shared. “I feel better about my future and the path ahead.”

The camp connects young learners with local health professionals. Camp Counselor Liam McFarren, who is studying biology, echoes Naomi’s sentiments. He plans to pursue dental school and has found the camp enhances his commitment to dental care.

“Doctors are overwhelmed with patients,” he explained. “I hear countless calls from people trying to get appointments. It shows how much need there is in our area.”

This camp aims to encourage students to stay in the U.P. after they become healthcare professionals. McFarren highlighted that Marquette and the surrounding areas lack sufficient medical services. “This camp allows students to explore a variety of healthcare roles,” he said, “even if they’re not 100% sure about medicine yet.”

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in healthcare careers among young people. According to a 2022 survey by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, applications to nursing schools have increased by 5% compared to previous years. Programs like this one at NMU are vital for fostering local talent and addressing community needs.

By sparking interest in health careers, this camp aims to build a healthier future for Upper Michigan. With more young people engaged in healthcare, the hope is that they will set down roots and make a positive impact in their communities.
