Unleashing Your Potential: Wheeling University Graduates Encouraged to Turn Dreams into Reality

WHEELING – At Wheeling University’s 67th Commencement, Rev. David Griffin urged the Class of 2025 to ignore critics and pursue their dreams. “Your final assignment is simple,” he said. “Make it happen.”

As degrees were awarded by President Dianna M. Vargo, Ed.D., Griffin also received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. He emphasized that graduation marks both an end and a beginning. “Remember to be grounded in your mission. Strive to lead and serve.”

Griffin shared valuable lessons, encouraging graduates to focus on solutions rather than excuses and to seek out mentors. He drew parallels to history, recalling President John F. Kennedy’s bold promise to land on the moon despite skepticism. “Critics often doubt what seems impossible,” he noted, reminding graduates of their potential to make a difference.

“Dream big in whatever path you choose,” he said.

Before handing out degrees, Vargo inspired the graduates to carry confidence and determination into their futures. “You are our proud example at Wheeling University,” she encouraged.

Valedictorian Jade Miller reflected on her journey. Choosing her father’s alma mater, she faced questions about her decision. “Four years later, I thank God for guiding us to ‘little old Wheeling.’” She highlighted that true value comes from character, kindness, and love, not just accolades. “Wheeling University taught me that it’s the people who make a place special,” she remarked, emphasizing the connections she forged during her time there.

University Board Chair David Hendrickson, J.D., urged graduates to help at least one person every day. “Small acts of kindness can create a better world,” he stated.

This year, the university recognized Jill Emery, Chair of Nursing, with the Fr. Edward Gannon, S.J. Outstanding Teaching Award. Two medals were presented for exceptional service and academics: Riley Kindall received the Mary Woomer Medal, while Dasyn Hores was honored with the Archbishop John J. Swint Medal.

As Commencement celebrating achievement unfolds, these messages of hope and purpose resonate deeply, encouraging graduates to make their mark on the world.
