Applications are now open for the Te Ara Urutau – Climate and Emergency Ready Fund. This new $1 million fund supports community organizations in Tāmaki Makaurau to take action on climate change and preparedness for emergencies.
The fund simplifies the application process by combining existing grants into one. This means it’s easier for communities to access support for projects aimed at reducing emissions, improving emergency readiness, and adapting to the changing climate.
Councillor Alf Filipaina, Chair of the Civil Defence and Emergency Management Committee, emphasized, “Every community has unique strengths and challenges regarding climate change. This fund empowers local and Māori-led solutions, supporting those who know their people and land best.”
He encourages communities to share their ideas to protect whānau and homes.
Applications can come from various organizations, including not-for-profits, Māori groups, schools, and social enterprises. This fund is open to groups at any stage of their climate action or emergency readiness journey.
Organizations can apply for up to two of these categories:
- Emergency Readiness and Response Funding: Grants from $5,000 to $15,000 support preparation for natural disasters.
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Funding: Grants from $5,000 to $15,000 for projects that aim to cut emissions and promote sustainability.
- Climate Adaptation Planning and Implementation: Grants from $5,000 to $40,000 help communities tackle issues like flooding and drought.
A recent study by the IPCC highlights that communities must adapt to climate impacts to avoid severe consequences. Early investments in preparedness can significantly reduce economic losses during extreme weather events. This fund aligns with those findings by directly empowering local solutions.
