LAKE CHARLES, La. – Learning how to heal your body through food can be a journey, but health experts believe it can truly change your life. In Lake Charles, the city has joined forces with CHRISTUS Ochsner to help locals improve their health.
They’ve launched a free program called “TalkHealthy With Me.” This three-week course aims to teach community members how to boost their overall health. The classes are held every Tuesday evening throughout February, which is also American Heart Health Month.
Kristie Evans, a registered dietitian with CHRISTUS Ochsner, has dedicated 27 years to helping people in the area on their health journeys. She emphasizes the importance of this month.
“February is heart month, and heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. That’s why we’re here—to educate everyone about heart-healthy nutrition,” said Evans.
One of the classes highlighted the Mediterranean diet. This diet includes whole grains, fish, beans, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. It’s known for improving heart health, reducing inflammation, and supporting a healthy metabolism.
Evans supports these benefits. “It’s the healthiest diet for preventing heart disease. Even losing a small amount of weight, like eight pounds, can help lower your blood pressure,” she explained.
She adds that balance is key. “Nutrition can be tricky, especially in Southwest Louisiana, where we have amazing food. It’s important to find a balance, focusing on good, heart-healthy options while still enjoying our favorites,” Evans said.
Evans encourages everyone to start making small, healthy changes each week. These little adjustments can significantly improve overall well-being and quality of life.
The next class is on Tuesday, February 18th, at 5:30 p.m. at the College Oaks Recreation Center on Ernest Street. This session will focus on smart snacking. For more information, you can call 337-491-1280.
