Unlock a Rewarding Career: Earn Your Associate of Science in Special Education at Ivy Tech Muncie-Henry County

MUNCIE, IN – As of September 2024, Indiana has over 300 openings for special education teachers. To address this demand, Ivy Tech Muncie-Henry County offers a Special Education program, one of the few of its kind in the Ivy Tech network. This 60-credit hour program spans four semesters and prepares future teachers with the essential skills to create inclusive classrooms for all students.

Dr. Sarah Haisley, the Department Chair for the Elementary Education Program, emphasizes the importance of special education teachers. She states, “They are the backbone of inclusive learning, helping every student, no matter their abilities, to thrive.”

Special education teachers make a significant impact by supporting students with various needs, from learning disabilities to physical challenges. Ivy Tech’s Associate of Science in Special Education lays a strong foundation for these future educators. The program teaches them to understand each student’s unique strengths, ensuring a supportive learning environment.

Students like Kamille Chambers choose this program for personal reasons. As a former special education student herself, she faced challenges due to being diagnosed with ADHD and a learning disability. A negative encounter with a teacher fueled her desire to change perceptions about special needs students. “I want to show that students with special needs can achieve their goals,” she explains.

Program Highlights

• 60 Credit Hours: Complete the program in just four semesters.
• TSAP Designation: This Transfer Single Articulation Pathway allows easy transfer to a four-year college as a junior, potentially saving students $10,000 in tuition.

Graduates can move on to bachelor’s programs at four-year colleges, with support from Ivy Tech’s Transfer Advocates. These advocates help students navigate their educational journey.

Completing this degree in two years involves 60 credit hours, which include:

• 30 General Education Credits
• 26 Program-Specific Credits
• 3 Institutional Requirement Credits
• 1 College Success Credit

By the time they graduate, students are well-prepared for their careers or further education. Wendi Anderson, a graduate of the program, shares, “Ivy Tech equipped me for my studies at Ball State’s Teachers College. The hands-on learning made for a smooth transition.” She appreciates the community support and growth she experienced through her studies.
