In the past, people ate natural fats from sources like butter, ghee, and nuts. They also stayed active with physical work. Now, many folks consume processed foods filled with unhealthy fats and lead more sedentary lives. This switch has led to obesity, heart disease, and other health issues.

According to Ms. Upasana Parv Kalra, who leads Nutrition & Dietetics at Max Super Speciality Hospital, it’s essential to look at the whole lifestyle. It’s not just about the types of fats we eat but also what we eat and how active we are. People used to burn off the fats they consumed through daily activities like walking or manual labor.

Using oils and fats in moderation is key. There are three types of fats: saturated, monounsaturated (MUFA), and polyunsaturated (PUFA). Ideally, only 7-10% of our fat intake should come from saturated fats. The rest should be healthy fats from plants or fish. Include ingredients like beans, millets, and leafy greens in your diet.

To make better choices, select healthy fats like those found in nuts, seeds, avocados, and olive oil while cutting back on trans fats. Reading food labels is crucial. Processed foods often hide unhealthy fats, so checking for ingredients like partially hydrogenated oils helps avoid these.

Here are some tips to lower your risk of lifestyle diseases:

  • Choose fresh food over processed options.
  • Cook by grilling, steaming, or baking instead of frying.
  • Get enough sleep; it’s vital for metabolism and recovery.
  • Stay hydrated with water, avoiding sugary drinks.

Finding balance is essential. Prioritize whole foods, stay active, hydrate well, and rest properly. These habits will keep you healthier and happier.
